University of Idaho Football Player Arrested for Rape Charges

By Nicole Hindberg on December 11, 2018

Over the weekend, University of Idaho freshman football player Kyree Currington was arrested after a student’s parents contacted the Moscow Police Department to report an on-campus rape in the Wallace residence halls. Currington was arrested around 5 a.m. Friday, December 7, and the University of Idaho Football team announced his indefinite suspension from the football team Saturday night. The university is conducting their own separate investigation from the police department.

His bail was set at $75,000; however, according to an email from University of Idaho President Chuck Staben, Currington was released from Latah County Jail Sunday morning.

It was released in the Lewiston Tribune that Currington was previously charged with two counts of battery in his hometown of New Orleans. The charges were dropped in June, therefore Currington was allowed to play on the football team and enroll at the University of Idaho. Currington and two fellow students got into a fight with two tourists, who happened to be white older men. The two used racial slurs against Currington and threw bottles at them. A video was posted on Facebook depicting the fight, which eventually led to the charges being dropped.

With Currington’s release, some uproar has occurred on campus. Responsively, President Staben assured the student body that this is a non-threatening situation and Currington is being compliant. Currington is not allowed on campus unless he is accompanied by a university official, therefore the situation isn’t seen as dangerous at this time.

The university has also assured the student body that it is looking into the case and handling it appropriately. Much controversy over this situation comes from the Athletic Department’s mishandling of a sexual assault situation years ago. The allegations came up last year and the Athletic Director was then fired after much review. Many students are worried that with the university’s history of mishandling sexual assault cases, that this will be a continuing pattern.

This story has caught the attention of USA Today. Much of their coverage focused on the fact that he’s a football player and how much he played, ending their article with “The Vandals finished 4-7 in the 2018 football season. Curington, a freshman, hardly played in his first season with the program. He saw his first field time in a Nov. 17 blowout loss to Florida.” The emphasis on his football status is also the source of much of the uproar among students surrounding this situation, especially because the Vandals’ football record has nothing to do with Currington’s alleged rape allegation.

The university is continuing to update students on this situation. There has not been any confirmation about what the next steps are.
